The George Mason University Jazz Studies Department combines performance, curriculum and service to support House Resolution 57 which states jazz is “hereby designated as a rare and valuable national American treasure.” The curriculum offer opportunities for improvisation, performance, recording, writing, leadership and service. Students have performed at the Shanghai Concert Hall (Beijing, China), Virginia Music Educators Association Conference, Blues Alley, Kansas City Jazz Summit, JEN Conferences, (Dallas, TX, New Orleans, LA), ACCENT Vocal Festival, University of Trinidad and Tobago and more. Recent guest artists include Eric Alexander, Peter Erskine, Doc Severinsen, Peter Bernstein, Byron Stripling, Bobby Floyd, Bria Skonberg, Alexis Cole, Stockton Helbing, Chip McNeill and more. Spring, 2020, George Mason University welcomes artist is residence, Maria Schneider! 
 
The George Mason University Jazz faculty are well respected performers as well as dedicated educators. They have presented and performed at the Jazz Education Network, National Jazz Workshop, Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshop, toured nationally and internationally and contributed to books and videos about Jazz education.
